There’s a lot that can be expanded upon, and including the new lore can really flesh out the world more and make some of the weaker connections stronger. In particular, Crisis Core expanded greatly on an undeveloped character (Zack) who ended up being pretty crucial to the plot and several character arcs, and the remake needs to capitalize on the contributions that Zack’s story brings in, especially as it relates to Aerith and Cloud.

From the movie Advent Children to the sequel Dirge of Cerberus to the prequel Crisis Core, the lore and history of the world has greatly expanded, and the remake has to address it. Since Final Fantasy 7, Square Enix has explored its world several times. The contrast between the sprawling, but empty overworld map and the small but detailed towns is hard to nail, and it’s something that they have to get right. One of Final Fantasy 7‘s biggest strengths is the juxtaposition of very small actions (Cloud’s mental illness, Aerith’s sacrifice) with very large events (the destruction of the world), and the world plays a lot into that.

The challenge is going to come in the design decision: do they keep the overworld structure of the original game and simply iterate on it, or do they go full open world, as the original game clearly wanted to achieve? It’s a tough choice, and they need to get it right. Furthermore, Lightning Returns could rely on a relatively small world filled with lots of detail, whereas the world of Final Fantasy 7 is just much more massive. First, Final Fantasy 7 had a large overworld map, which (to use a modern example) would be closest to Final Fantasy Type-0, which didn’t really use the overworld map to the best of its ability. And as well as Lightning Returns used the transition of enclosed city to open world to give the game a massive scope, the challenge with Final Fantasy 7 is much greater. Obviously, open-world games are popular these days, and if Final Fantasy 15 and Lightning Returns are any indication, Square Enix is trying hard to get this right. One of the most striking moments of Final Fantasy 7 is when you leave the starting area of Midgar into the rest of the world, realizing that the game takes place in something much larger than you’ve been lead to believe. Here’s what I want to see out of the HD remake of Final Fantasy 7: I guess what I want to see more out of this remake is a “Director’s Cut” of sorts, something that fixes the flaws of the original game but retains all the features we loved so much. It’s clear that Squaresoft was still figuring out their graphical technology and JRPG structure in the modern console era (which would show in the well-polished Final Fantasy 9), as well as a mixed localization and some pacing issues. As great a game that is Final Fantasy 7, it has a lot of flaws. Rather than the killer app, Final Fantasy 7 was simply a fantastic JRPG and a wonderful addition to the collection of PS1 classics.Īs such, while I am certainly excited for this new remake, I’m admittedly less interested in replaying the game as it once was, but am more excited for the improvements that will come with the new release.
But I came to it after playing parts of Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 9, so my experience lacks the wonder that came from fans who first played Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation and were amazed by what was then impressive CGI and FMV graphics. Its villain, Sephiroth, is iconic, and its hero, Cloud, is a great deconstruction of the typical JRPG hero.
It tackles some heavy themes, such as legacy, memory, and identity. It has an interesting plot, excellent characters, an engaging battle system, and is an overall well-crafted experience. To put this into context, Final Fantasy 7 is one of my favorite JRPGs. For what is quite possible the biggest news story of E3, several video game journalists and pundits have already discussed their thoughts, predictions, and concerns with this crazy idea, and I suppose I have to put my thoughts out there as well. Sony shocked the world at E3, announcing a game that has been on the front of every fanboy’s mind for the better part of a decade: an HD remake of the classic JRPG Final Fantasy 7.
